Halloween Candy: Beware of the Monster Cavities During This Trick-Or-Treat Season
Many kids love Halloween for the costumes and trick-or-treating. This year, don’t let cavities become part of the annual tradition, too.
Whether your child brings home a giant bag of candy or you have dozens of pieces left over from the candy you buy at the store, many families struggle with what to do with all the candy in the house come Halloween. If you’re not careful, you and your kids can wind up with several cavities.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a piece or two of candy. Like most things, moderation is OK.
However, not all candies are created equal when it comes to their ability to promote tooth decay. And there are several things you can do to prevent cavities when indulging.
Avoid Sticky Candies
Chocolate lovers will love this news: sticky candies like licorice and taffy can promote more tooth decay than plain chocolate because they’re hard to get off your teeth.
The longer they stay on your teeth, the more likely you are to develop tooth decay.
Don’t Snack On Candy
When you or your kids want to sample Halloween candy, be sure to eat it during mealtime.
That’s because when you eat lunch or dinner, your mouth creates saliva, which naturally helps wash off the sugar on your teeth.
One of the best things about choosing water every day is how it helps rinse your mouth. Every time you sip on plain water, you’re helping your teeth stay clean.
Brush and Floss Daily
There’s a reason your dentist and dental hygienist tells you to brush at least twice a day and floss daily: It helps prevent cavities and gum disease.
And when you take care of your oral health, you’re taking care of your overall health, too. There’s nothing scary about that!
